Meet Stanley

Stanley is feisty! He holds on longer to the line, does some death rolling, and will try to swim away with your pole. Stanley has no defining marks; you'll know it's Stanley when you feed him. Be patient and he will let you loose....eventually.

ABOUT AMERICAN ALLIGATORSSmugglersCoveAlligatorMasotnowhite

American alligators have been around for at least 8 million years, and possibly longer. Fossil evidence shows they’ve changed very little over time — earning them the nickname “living fossils.” They’re among the most unchanged species— surviving ice ages, sea-level shifts, and even giant prehistoric crocodiles. Pretty epic!
American alligators were once endangered, especially in the mid-20th century due to overhunting and habitat loss. Thanks to strong protections under the Endangered Species Act, they made a dramatic recovery.

However, they’re still federally protected as “threatened”. 🌿

What Threats Still Exist?

  • Habitat loss from wetland drainage and development is the biggest ongoing concern.
  • Pollution, climate change, and human interactions can disrupt their ecosystems.
In captivity, they’re safe from bigger gators, humans, and environmental threats.
  • Consistent food supply: No need to hunt or compete — meals are served!
  • Veterinary care: Regular checkups help catch health issues early.
  • Controlled environment: Clean water, temperature regulation, and spacious enclosures reduce stress and disease.

INTERESTING AMERICAN ALLIGATOR FACTS:
  • What do you call a group of alligators hanging out together?
A "pod"! They congregate in pods for protection, especially when they are young. There is strength in numbers. Teamwork helps the tiniest gators avoid danger!
  • Do alligators take care of their babies?
Yes! Alligator moms are super protective. They guard their eggs and help their hatchlings get safely to the water. Some even give their babies rides in their mouths!
  • Can alligators talk to each other?
They sure can — in gator language! Grownups bellow, babies chirp, and they splash or slap the water to say things like "back off" or "look at me!"
  • What do alligators do when it gets cold?
They find a cozy spot and slow way down — it’s called brumation (like hibernation).
  • Why are alligators called "ecosystem engineers"?
Because they dig water holes in the wild that help other animals survive! Big impact, small motive. These holes become lifesaving oases for fish, birds, turtles, and other wildlife during droughts. Scientists call this “ecosystem engineering” because the gators’ actions reshape the environment in ways that benefit many species.
    • Nutrient cycling bonus. By disturbing sediment and moving nutrients around with their snouts, claws, and tails, alligators enrich the soil and prevent harmful buildup of bacteria and algae mats.
    • So, while they’re not consciously playing the role of superheroes, their survival instincts end up supporting entire ecosystems — especially in places like the Everglades.
    • “Gators don’t know they’re heroes… but nature sure does!” 🐊🌿💧

🦷 Gator Teeth on Repeat

Alligators can go through up to 3,000 teeth in a lifetime!
They constantly lose and regrow teeth — like nature’s version of a vending machine.

   🌀 The Famous “Death Roll”

When tackling large prey, alligators perform a death roll — a wild spin that helps them tear food into bite-sized chunks.
It’s equal parts terrifying and impressive!

   🧪 Built-In Night Vision

Their eyes glow red in the dark when hit with light — thanks to a special layer called the tapetum lucidum, which boosts night vision.

   🐊 Tail Regeneration (Yes, Really!)

Juvenile alligators can regrow part of their tails — up to 9 inches!

🧬 Temperature = Gender

The temperature of the nest decides whether baby gators are male or female.
Cooler temps = girls, warmer temps = boys. No gender reveal parties needed!

🏊 Hydroplaning Reptiles

Alligators can skim across the water’s surface using their powerful tails — like reptilian jet skis!
